Military Medal Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 185 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'On the 4th July, 1918, during the attack on the enemy trenches east of HAMEL, Sergeant SYMES, MM, was in charge of No. 2 forward party of the Brigade Signal Section. He skilfully manoeuvred his party forward under heavy artillery fire, and succeeded in establishing communication with Rear Brigade Headquarters within 30 minutes of the commencement of the barrage. Throughout the whole operation he set a fine example of courage and devotion to duty.'
