'During the attack on POLYGON WOOD, east of YPRES on 20/21st September, 1917, Sgt. TAYLOR-VERNON acted as Platoon Commander. By his great courage and personal example he kept his men in cheerful spirits throughout the whole operations. He also took charge of another platoon whose Officer had become a casualty, reorganised same and materially assisted in the consolidation of the position. During heavy enemy barrage on the night of 21st September, by conspicuous gallantry and disregard of personal safety, he got all his men under good cover, thus avoiding many casualties.'
