'On 20th September 1917 near WESTHOEK in capacity of a runner he displayed the utmost good judgement and courage throughout the attack. He successfully brought up reinforcements to replace casualties, and continously carried messages to and from the front line and Company Headquarters and through most heavy barrages. he moved fearlessly from position to position under fire from enemy snipers. He set an excellent example to all the men around him.'
