Embarked Sydney on 'Demosthenes', 22 December 1916; disembarked Plymouth, 3 March 1917 and marched into 7th Training Bn, Rollestone.

Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 17 March 1917 (eczema); discharged to unit, 3 April 1917.

Found guilty, 12 April 1917, of being absent without leave, 6.00 am, 10 April, to 3.15 pm, 10 April 1917: awarded 1 day's confinement to quarters; forfeited total of 3 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France through Southampton, 19 June 1917; marched into No 2 Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 20 June 1917; moved out, 7 July 1917; marched into 25th Bn and taken on strength, 9 July 1917.

Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 20 October 1917 (laryngitis); transferred to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 26 July 1917; to 26th General Hospital, 28 October 1917. Proceeded to England on HS 'Pieter de Conick', 9 November 1917; admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, 10 November 1917 (severely gassed); discharged on furlough, 8 December 1917.

Admitted to 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, from No 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 12 December 1917 (shoulder injury); discharged on balance of furlough, 20 December 1917. Marched into Command Depot, Hurdcott, 27 January 1918.

Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 29 January 1918 (ichthyosis); discharged to duty, 31 January 1918; marched into Command Depot, Hurdcott, 1 February 1918; marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 27 May 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on HT 'Essex', 7 June 1918; disembarked Sydney, 1 August 1918, for onward travel to Brisbane. Discharged as being medically unfit for service, 19 August 1918.
