During the Battle of the Somme in France he was buried three times by bombs, and consequently suffered from shell shock. Was evacuated from France to England as a result of this and from the effects of being gassed. Married Hilda Whiting in 1919 and had six children (4 boys and two girls). Was allocated a Soldier Settlement Block in Tintaldara, Victoria where he operated a dairy farm for approx. 10 years. He then moved to Batlow, New South Wales and worked as a general labourer on farms and orchards in the area. His death in 1955 was from pneumonia (as a result of gassing and loss of lung function).
