'During the attack on the GIRD TRENCHS, near FLERS, on 14th November, 1916, this man rendered conspicuously good service. On the capture of the first objective, he was posted with his Lewis Machine GUn on the extreme right flank. He displayed the greatest courage and devotion to duty for a period of 40 hours without relief. He was instrumental in repelling several bombing attacks by the enemy during the night. Throughout the whole period he displayed a splendid spirit and by his cheery demeanour, kept up the spirits of those around him.'
