Military Medal 'On the night of 18th September 1917, the road from ZILLEBEKE to Birr Cross Roads was heavily shelled. The wagon in charge of Private Blackmore was hit and Private Blackmore thrown from he seat and badly wounded. Driver Thompson handed over his mules to the care of another man, and, although shells were falling thickly, he lifted the wounded man and carried him in the direction of the Dressing Station, whilst doing so he was twice knocked down by the blast from exploding shells. he was afterwards assisted by Captain Rowland Tillett and successfully got the wounded man under cover. Thompson afterwards came back, took over his team and removed his wagon to a place of safety. During the whole of this time the area was under continuous and heavy shell fire. This act was performed in the presence of about 400 men and was a fine example of courage and self-sacrifice.'
