'This N.C.O. while in charge of bearer squad carrying south of ZONNEBEKE on 4th October, 1917, under heavy enemy shell fire rescued two wounded men who were bogged, dressed them and helped them to a place of safety. He also by his courage and coolness kept his bearers carrying through the barrage and brought them through safely on two occasions.'
