Military Medal 'In connection with the operations at PERONNE on 1st and 2nd September 1918 this man carried out the duties of runner from forward machine gun posts to rear headquarters. He had to pass through heavy barrages of artillery and machine gun fire, and although suffering from fatigue and the effects of gas, he steadfastly carried on in a most gallant manner until he became quite exhausted. His devotion to duty and bravery resulted in good communication being maintained. He set a splendid example to his comrades, and contributed largely to the success of the operations.'
