'During the fighting east of YPRES on 20th September, 1917, Pte. TORMEY did gallant work as a stretcher bearer carrying wounded back through the barrage until he was wounded. He refused to go to the rear and though unable to carry a stretcher, continued to do splendid work dressing the wounded in the open under heavy fire.'
