Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Wounded in action, 20 July 1916; subsequently reported missing in action, 20 July 1916. Buried 'in the vicinity of Fleurbaix'. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 1 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 2770804, 984 Pte J.J. WILIAMS, 31st Bn, 26 July 1917: 'I saw Casualty fall. He sand out as he fell at Fleurs on the 19th July in No Man's Land when he went over the parapet in the 2nd wave. He fell about 100 yards from the parapet. He threw up his rifle as he was hit.' Second statement, 952 Pte H.J. TAYLOR, D Company, 31st Bn, 16 June 1917: 'Cpl. Treble was a few yards from me in the advance at Fleurbaix, Armentieres on July 20th. A shell exploded and wounded me in the leg. When I picked myself up there was no sign of Cpl.
