Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Reported missing, 20 July 1916. File (p. 7) bears notation: Identification disc received from Germany. No particulars were afforded except that soldier is deceased. To be reported KILLED IN ACTION 20/7/1916'. Father wrote to base Records, 19 January 1917, seeking any information: 'I should be obliged if you could kindly let me know the present position from the Military point of view, the uncertainty being very wearing to the members of his family.' Note on Red Cross File No 2790106: 'The above name appeared on German death list dated 4-11-16.' Father wrote to Base Records, enclosing a copyof a letter from Australian Branch Red Cross Society, London, 15 December 1916, informing him that his son's name had been included on a German death list.
