File (p. 7) bears notation: Identification disc received from Germany. No particulars were afforded except that soldier is deceased. To be reported KILLED IN ACTION 20/7/1916'. Father wrote to base Records, 19 January 1917, seeking any information: 'I should be obliged if you could kindly let me know the present position from the Military point of view, the uncertainty being very wearing to the members of his family.' Note on Red Cross File No 2790106: 'The above name appeared on German death list dated 4-11-16.'
