'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy counter attack. he was in charge of reserve gun teams, and hurried forward to reinforce the front line through a heavy barrage. He kept his guns in action under heavy shelling,visiting each gun and encouraging the men, inspiring them by his courage and coolness under trying conditions.'
