'On 5th April 1918 during active operations near DERNANCOURT South West of ALBERT when his Battalion was in support this N.C.O. under heavy shell fire and at great personal risk went to the assistance of several men who were wounded and carried them to safety and afterwards assisted them to the Dressing Station. His cheerful manner, coolness under fire and ready assistance set a splendid example to all.'
