Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on 9th August, 1915, at Lone Pine (Dardanelles). He was a bomber, and as he was about to throw a bomb two of the enemy's bombs fell close to him. Having thrown his own, with great presence of mind and courage he picked up and threw back one of the enemy's bombs, which burst on leaving his hand, and smothered the other with a sandbag. At that time the trench was fully occupied, and his gallant action undoubtedly prevented serious loss.'
