'Near Glenconse Wood on the afternoon of 24th September 1917 Corporal VICKERY was engaged with a party building a forward plank road. While work was in progress the party were heavily shelled, causing casualties to his party and to infantry passing along the road. The party became scattered and somewhat disorganised in consequence. With great courage Corporal VICKERY assisted Lieut. Pierce in organising parties to clear the wounded from the shelled area, and at the same time reorganised the working party. His splendid example rallied the men and the work was completed.'
