'At POZIERES, FRANCE, 18/19th. August 1916. When advancing against the enemy trenches this N.C.O. went with 2/Lieut RAUERT to a unit on our right which was in danger of losing touch with the line, owing to loss of officers and N.C.O.s. He displayed great gallantry and resourcefulness in collecting and re-organising the men, getting them to dig in, and connect up with 6th Battalion. He also attended to the removal of killed and wounded and greatly assisted his officer in a critical situation.'
