Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near ASCENSION WOOD on 18th September 1918. Acting as bayonet man he led a bombing party which successfully rushed a Machine Gun post along a C.T. From here he rushed ahead and bombing along on his own initiative drove five of the enemy down a dugout in which he killed three and mortally wounded two. Later in the enemy second system again at the head of the party he despatched two more Huns with the bayonet. His dash and courage went far towards carrying on men in an operations where the numerical odds were all on the enemy side. His bayonet work was excellent.'
