'In the operation of 18th September, 1918 near HARGICOURT, Private WAIN by his dash and courage saved the life of his platoon commander. The two had reached an enemy position, the garrison of which were sheltering in a deep dugout. Engaged in clearing up the position, the Officer would undoubedly have been taken unawares by one of the enemy who had emerged from an unguarded entrance, had it not been for the vigilance of Private WANE. Dashing along and jumping from the parapet, he sent the man in the act of firing headlong down the dugout and then bombed and mopped up the position.'
