'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917, he led his men with dash and helped materially in the consolidation. During a counter-attack he rallied his section and got all men around him under control and put in some telling work. His general bearing helped to keep his men in good spirits. He showed absolute disregard for personal safety.'
