Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916.

Posted missing in action, 20 July 1916.

Court of Enquiry, held in the field, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'.

Statement, Red Cross File No 2851104, 1972 Pte A.B. CURTIS, 30th Bn (patient, 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, England), 24 April 1917: 'He was killed during the Fromelles stunt on July 19th-22nd and was brought in from No Man's Land two days after, and buried just behind the lines at Fromelles. I did not see him hit or his grave, but it was generally known in the Batt ... '

Second statement, 1997 Pte Charles Harold CARVER, 30th Bn (patient, 2nd General Hospital (Casino), Havre), 8 December 1916: 'He was killed by machine gun Fire (sic) at Fromelles on the 20th July in No Man's Land. His body was not recovered. I was present when this happened.'

Third statement, 838 Sergeant B.A. BRAGG, D Company, 30th Bn, 16 February 1917: 'Killed 19/20 July ... disc taken off person about [a] fortnight after in our own wire.'

Fourth statement, 2370 Pte T. QUINN, 30th Bn, 15 September 1919: 'Early in the morning of 20-7-16 we were attacking at Flers when I saw him hit by a machine gun bullet. He was hit in the head and died an hour later without regaining consciousness. His body was carried back behind the line at Flers where all our Battalion dead were buried, in Company, military crosses were erected. Padre of our Battalion, officiating. The ground was held.'
