Other details

Born in Williamstown, Victoria, where his father, Robert, was a police constable. His father died when his son was 10 years old, leaving his mother to raise the family on the income from a small dairy herd. Frederick had to rise early (around 5 a.m.) to assist with the milking; school was consequently difficult, and he left at the age of 12. He joined the Victorian Railways, first as a cleaner, then locomotive fireman, then driver. On enlistment in the AIF he joined the locomotive unit, and served in Egypt and then France. He was slightly injured when his engine hit a mine or was hit by a shell.
