Embarked from Sydney, 17 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 January 1917. Found guilty, Durrington Camp, of being absent without leave, midnight,29 January to 9.30 am, 30 January 1917: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No. 2, and forfeited 6 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 5 April 1917; taken on strength, 36th Bn, 28 April 1917.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 7 June 1917; admitted to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 8 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left hand); transferred to England, 13 and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, 14 June 1917. Granted furlough, 14 July 1917, t o report to No. 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 28 July 1917. Found guilty, 28 July 1917, of being absent without leave, 3.30 pm, 28 July, to 8.45 pm, 30 July 1917: awarded 4 days' confined to camp and forfeited 3 days' pay. Marched in to No. 3 Command Depot, 10 August 1917. Admitted to Fovant Hospital, 25 August 1917 (wound, finger); transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, 26 September 1917; discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 28 September 1917; to Australian Army Medical Corps Details, Parkhouse, 12 April 1918. Marched out to AIF Headquarters, London, for duty, 23 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Karoa', 28 March 1919 (duty: escort for mental cases); discharged, 20 June 1919.
