'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Under very heavy artillery fire he continued to dress the wounded for 2 and a half hours. Though many of the bearers were killed and wounded he stayed with the stretcher cases, and it was owing to his fine courage and energy that many of the wounded were saved.'
