'For great gallantry and good work, especially on the morning of 2 October, 1918. A troop was on patrol on the Damascus-Aleppo road when they were cut off from the main body by a force of 1,500 enemy. Under heavy machine gun and rifle fire, he stopped to assist fallen comrades, and but for him two men would have been captured or killed.'
