'During the attack east of MONT ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE on 2nd September 1918, this N.C.O. while in charge of the Battalion Runners, repeatedly carried messages over ground swept by artillery and machine gun fire, thus maintaining communication between the Battalion and its Companies during a most important period of the battle. During these journeys he was able, by the exhibition of keen powers of observation, to gain most valuable information, which he imparted to his Battalion Commander and the Company Commanders.'
