Military Medal 'This Driver, on 7th October, 1917, near WESTHOEK with his detachment of wagons working in forward area under C.E., 1st ANZAC carrying planking for road building, showed commendable spirit by his devotion to duty under enemy shell fire. A shell burst close to his wagon in CHATEAU WOOD blowing the Driver from his seat to the ground. His horses bolted - regaining his feet he overtook them and climbing into his wagon regained control. At this point the road was blown up and traffic was congested. The action of this Driver saved a most serious accident to wagons ahead as the road here is only nine feet wide. Enemy fire was continuous at this point.'
