Adjutant, 20th Bn, Liverpool Camp, wrote to Adjutant, Infantry Depot, 23 June 1915: 'I shall be glad to have the Camp Commandant's approval of the following discharge: No 1334 Pte White W.B. This man has been twice crimed, cannot learn his drill, and does not take any interest in his work.' Commandant: 'Not approved. 24 June 1915.'

War service: Egypt, Western Front

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 27 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 3 April 1916; taken on strength, 18th Bn, 1 June 1916.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 13 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left leg, hand), and admitted to 17th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 17 September 1916; to England, 18 September 1916, and admitted to Reading War Hospital, 19 September 1916 (wounds: severe); discharged to furlough, 17 January 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 1 February 1917.

Admitted to Delhi Hospital, Perham Downs, 4 February 1917 (septic thigh); marched into No 1 Command Depot, 24 April 1917. Admitted to Fovant Hospital, 25 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh); marched into No 3 Command Depot, 12 September 1917. Found guilty, Hurdcott, 29 September 1917, of being absent without leave, midnight, 28 September, to 5.30 pm, 29 September 1917: awarded 3 days' confined to camp; forfeited 1 day's pay.

Tried by District Court Martial, Hurdcott, 21 December 1917 on charges of (1) at Hurdcott at about 0030, 28 October 1917, being in possession of a false pass (2) at Hurdcott on 28 October 1917 of being in possession of 10.5 blank leave passes; pleaded not gulty to both charges. Found guilty on both charges: awarded 35 days' detention; forfeiture of a total of 89 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 12 June 1918; rejoined 18th Bn, 20 June 1918.

Wounded in action, 8 August 1918 (gun shot wound, right arm and hip), and admitted to 15th Field Ambulance; transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 9 September 1918; to England, 13 August 1918, and admitted to King's Heath Section, Birmingham, 15 August 1918 (wound: severe); to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 21 August 1918; granted furlough, 3 September 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 17 September 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'D24', 19 October 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 27 December 1918, for onward travel to Sudney; discharged, 10 April 1919.
