Military Medal 'Near YPRES on 4th October, 1917, L/Cpl. WIGNELL when in charge of a pack train displayed great courage and devotion to duty. During heavy enemy shelling in which one man of the pack train was killed and 4 others injured, he brought the wounded men out of the shelled area and placed them in shell holes in comparative safety, had them conveyed to the dressing station and then collected the scattered pack train carried on and completed his job.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 31 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'At WESTHOEK RIDGE south east of YPRES on 7th October, 1917, Lance Corporal WIGNELL was in charge of a party loading pack animals, when the enemy commenced shelling the position very heavily. Several men were badly wounded. Regardless of the heavy fire, L/Cpl. WIGNELL remained at his post, attednded two of the wounded men and placed them in safety. He then procured stretchers and had them conveyed to the dressing station. He displayed great personal bravery and presence of mind throughout the whole period and by his courage and prompt action set a fine example to the other men and doubtless saved several lives.'
