'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, near PROYART, this man was a Company runner and made many trips around the Company area through continuous heavy shell and machine gun fire. on his Company Commander being wounded he immediately, on his own initiative, set out to find if there were any other Officers left, and on finding one he informed him of the exact state of affairs, and thus cleared up what might have been a very difficult situation.'
