Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in charge of a post of eight men and a Lewis gun. He was attacked by enemy raiding parties from three directions. Two parties were driven off, and, when the third entered the trench from the rear of his post, he immediately rushed them and drove them out. Owing to his courage, initiative, and resource the raid was a failure.'
