Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a bearer subdivision. Although himself wounded in the head, he led his bearers forward, and when one of them was badly wounded he remained alone with him in a shallow trench for three hours under intense and concentrated shell fire, which finally smashed the stretcher on which the wounded man was lying. He eventually got him away to a place of safety, returned to look for more wounded, and succeeded in getting them away. He then reported his own wound'
