Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 20 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 27 March 1916.

Admitted to hospital, 7 April 1917; transferred to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 10 April 1917. Transferred to England, 18 June 1917 (debility); marched in to No. 1 Command Depot, 20 June 1917. Admitted to 2nd Scottish General Hospital, 27 July 1917 (debility and headaches); transferred to No. 1 Auxiliary Hospital, 20 September 1917; discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 30 October 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 6 February 1918; rejoined unit, 15 February 1918.

Wounded in action, 11 August 1918 (gun shot wound, left shoulder and abdomen). Transferred to England and admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, 15 August 1918. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 21 August 1918. Discharged, and granted furlough, 14 September 1918, to report to No. 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 28 September 1918.
