'During the attack East of MONT ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE on 2nd September 1918, these men [654 R. PENNY, 5113 S. WILLIAMS, 1004 A.G. McINTOSH, 6336 A. JENNER] were stretcher bearers. The casualties were heavy, and they worked continuously all day and the succeeding night, attending and carrying wounded. All this work was performed under artillery and machine gun fire, which for some hours during the early part of the fight was most intense. The gallantry and devotion of these men was the means of saving the lives of many of the wounded.'
