War service: embarked from Melbourne, 22 December 1914. Transferred to England. Found guilty by Court Martial, 19 January 1915, of disobeying a lawful command, in that on troopship HMAT A40, on 12 January 1915, when paraded he refused to submit to inoculation when ordered to do so by the Medical Officer; pleaded Not Guilty. Awarded forfeiture of 30 days' pay. Admitted to Military Hospital, Hilsea, Hampshire, England, 10 April 1915; discharged, 19 April 1915. Re-admitted, 25 May 1915; discharged, 2 June 1915. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Runic', 7 November 1915; disembarked Melbourne, 21 December 1915; discharged, 23 May 1916 (septic poisoning). Subsequent claim for incapacity pension rejected on the grounds that that the incapacity was not due to employment in warlike operations. Medal: British War Medal |
