War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to 54th from 5th Training Bn, Zeitoun, 14 February 1916; joined 54th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19/20 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19/20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 531103, 3540 Pte T.R. GREEN, 54th Bn (patient, Wharncliff War Hospital, Sheffield, England), 25 September 1916: 'Informant states that on 21st July at Sailly Pte Brindal was wounded and died the following day. Informant had a letter from Pte Ball, D. Coy, 54th A.I.F. saying that it was hard lines when you had to bury your own pals and that he had buried Brindal.' Second statement, 3452 Pte G.E. ALLEN, D Company, 54th Bn, 23 January 1917: 'Brindal was killed in an attack on a German trench at Fromelles on July 19th. I saw his body in the German lines. we had to retire[;] his body could not be picked up.' Note on file: 'No trace Germany. Cert by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.'
