Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He volunteered to carry a message to battalion headquarters, having to pass through several belts of fire of advanced enemy machine guns. He was severely wounded in the back, and unable to rise, but crawled over open ground, constantly sniped at, and, in spite of great pain, he struggled on until he delivered his message. His splendid example of courage and determination was worthy of the highest praise.'
