Military Medal 'At HANEBEKE WOOD on 20th September 1917 this N.C.O. throughout the attack set a very fine example to all ranks with his cheerful manner, his coolness and wonderful courage under most trying conditions. During the first enemy counter-attack on night of 21st September a party of 50 men were required to go back to the dump for ammunition, and take it from there to the furthest objective. This N.C.O. at once volunteered to take charge of the party, which he did, and moved backward and forward from the dump to the front line under an intense enemy barrage, notwithstanding his party having heavy casualties.'
