Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The enemy shelled a light railway train, and a truck containing ammunition was set on fire, several explosions were caused, and other trucks were set alight. He at once went to the spot, uncoupled single handed the burning trucks, and enabled the rest of the train to be got away. Further explosions still occurred, and, by his courage and presence of mind, he prevented the destruction of a large amount of ammunition and rolling stock.'
