Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry during the attack on the HINDENBURG Line on 3rd May 1917 when he engaged a strongly held part of the line with his gun. he was able thereby to assist a bombing party to capture the enemy post but lost the remainder of the Lewis team in so doing.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 189 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At BROODSEINDE on 4th October, 1917, he used his Lewis Gun in firing from the hip with great effect, and inflicted severe casualties on all parties of the enemy. On reaching the objective he salvaged ammunition and kept his gun continually in action against enemy on our own and other sectors. Later, he did splendid work in picking suitable emplacements and engaging enemy posts therefrom and silencing them. Though wounded he insisted in remaining on duty until relief arrived.'
