Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in a raid on the enemy's trenches. He was responsible for keeping direction on the flank during the advance, and guided his men with plendid judgment and skill under the most difficult conditions. The party met with strong resistance from the enemy, and he showed great determination in the hand to hand struggle which ensued, personally accounting for two of the enemy.
