'At NOREUIL on 2nd April, 1917, this man on seeing a number of Non Commissioned Officers shot down before getting into the village went out in front and led the men about him. going through the village his rifle was shot out of his hands. He continued to lead his men armed only with his bayonet, displaying great courage and daring. Previous to going into action he did excellent work on patrols.'
