Military Medal 'On the night of the 14th/15th July, 1917, near GAPAARD, MESSINES RIDGE, Private WOODS was a member of a working party engaged just behind the front line, when one of our infantry patrols (34th Infantry Battalion) was attacked, one member of that patrol was wounded and left in No Man's Land, about 300 yards from our front line, and as no stretcher bearers were available, volunteers were called for, and Private WOODS and an infantry man went out and brought the wounded man in to a place of safety behind our line. This action was carried out under heavy shell fire. Private WOODS showed great courage and determination in carrying out the act he had volunteered for, and was a fine example to those who witnessed the action.'
