This section came under Heavy Machine Gun Fire from a range not exceeding 500 yards and from 77mm Guns at 800 yards. Whilst occupying this position, this Gunner set a splendid example by his coolness and disregard of danger. he subsequently acted in a similarly fearless manner during the withdrawal of his gun. After this was accomplished he obtained a stretcher, and with the assistance of another man returned to the position and carried away a man who had been wounded. This was done in full view of the enemy and under Machine Gun fire. This man's excellent example is deserving of special recognition.'
