'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 2nd September 1918 near MONT ST. QUENTIN, near PERONNE. This driver was lead driver of a gun team which was heavily shelled on coming into action on two occasions. On each occasion his steadiness and initiative in leading and directing his team was responsible for getting his gun into action. Later he returned to the wagon lines and brought up ammunition under heavy shell fire. Still later at night he returned again and alone brought up rations and stores to his gun detachment.'
