Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the gun next to him had lost the whole detachment except one, and he himself had only one N.C.O. and one gunner left, he detailed the N.C.O. to take charge of the other gun, thus keeping both guns in action throughout the whole operation. This was done on his own initiative under very heavy shell fire when there was no other to control the fire of his battery. Throughout the day he displayed remarkable coolness and set a very fine example to his men.'
