Embarked Sydney, 1 August 1917; transshipped to SS 'Orita', Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, 21 September 1917; disembarked Liverpool, England, 3 October 1917, and marched in same day to 4th Training Bn, Codford.

Found guilty, Codford, 23 January 1918, of being absent without leave from midnight, 12 January 1918, until apprehended by Military Police at 1900 same day, in Bristol: awarded 20 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of a total of 31 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 30 January 1918; taken on strength, 16th Bn, in the field, 9 February 1918.

Found guilty, 28 April 1918, of being absent without leave from 7.30 am, 18 April 1918, until apprehended in Abbeville, 24 April 1918: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 308 days' pay.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 26 May 1918, of being absent without leave from 4 May 1918 until 8 pm, 9 May 1918: awarded 90 days' Field Punishment No 2; 7 days of sentence remitted by Lt Gen J Monash, 31 July 1918.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 17 October 1918, of desertion, being absent without leave from 7.45 am, 8 September 1918 until apprehended, 6 October 1918: awarded 10 years' imprisonment.

Proceeded under escort to England on board SS 'Nervana', 6 March 1919, for admission to HM Prison, Portland, under sentence of 10 years' imprisonment.

Sentence suspended on release from prison, 24 May 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'City of Exeter', 12 July 1919; disembarked Fremantle, 16 August 1919; discharged, Perth, 7 November 1919.
