'For gallantry and devotion to duty. In the neighbourhood of PERONNE, during operations of September 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, this Sapper, in daylight, with his Officer reconnoitred the SOMME Valley, and forward from PERONNE towards DOINGT. During the night, his knowledge of the locality 500 yards ahead of the Infantry, has assisted in the successful completion of a track across the SOMME Swamp. Whilst he was removing mines off the PERONNE DOINGT Road, he was wounded. He has throughout, exhibited the highest courage and unflagging energy, setting a fine example to all ranks.'
