'During the recent operations since 22nd August, this Non Commissioned Officer has commanded his gun with marked ability, displaying great initiative and resource under heavy hostile shell fire and by his splendid devotion to duty, setting an excellent example to the men of the Battery. He has at all times shown conspicuous bravery, and an absolute disregard for his own personal safety.'
