At the landing, 25 April 1915, when his boat was sunk, he and his mate, Pte A. Alexander, swam ashore. Killed by a sniper's bullet while engaged in taking observations at Gaba Tepe. Pte G.L. Mouldey wrote: "Jack was killed in action. He lived about an hour; almost his last words were that he had done his duty.'
